Colombia's coal, gold, platinum output falls in 2017
Production of coal, gold, platinum, iron ore and phosphates in Colombia declined in the third quarter, as nickel, silver and emeralds rose, the government said.
As Latin America's largest coal producer, Colombia saw coal output decline 1% to 89.4Mt last year compared with 90.5Mt a year earlier, the national mining agency (ANM) said in a statement.
Gold production plunged 34% to 1.32Moz from 1.99Moz a year earlier, the agency said. The government has imposed tougher controls on gold trading as part of a clampdown on illegal mining. Platinum fell 18% to 18,197oz from 29,481oz.
"These figures confirm the tasks of monitoring and control that we're carrying out. We can't allow the issue of illegal mining to steal the limelight from legal mining," energy and mines Minister Germán Arce said. "The government will continue to block those who seek to illegally extract Colombians' resources."
Iron ore slid 0.3% to 712,515t from 715,692t a year ago and phosphate rock fell 3.6% to 41,323t from 42,889t, the agency said.
Nickel output rose 9% to 89.52Mlb at the Cerro Matoso mine, owned by BHP Billiton spin-off South32, from 81.78Mlb a year ago. Silver was up 4.3% to 349,489oz from 335,248oz, while emeralds gained 5% to 2.13mn carats from 2.03mn carats a year earlier, according to the agency.
President Juan Manuel Santos is courting mining investment to diversify the Andean country's economy away from its dependence on hydrocarbons. The mining industry is studying US$7.6bn in gold, silver and copper projects over the next five years, according to the mining association (ACM).
Companies including AngloGold Ashanti, Eco Oro Minerals, Continental Gold and Cornerstone Capital Resources have lined up projects in Colombia, while Vancouver-based Red Eagle Mining began production at its US$55mn San Ramón gold mine in late 2016.
