Peru completing Pan American Games infrastructure
Peru, which is working flat out to complete infrastructure for the 4.3bn-sol (US$1.3bn) Pan American Games, due be held in Lima starting on July 26, has finished work on a revamped soccer stadium.
The San Marcos University stadium was officially presented to the Peruvian soccer federation, according to Lima2019, the agency in charge of the games. The stadium features a soccer field, four grandstands, a skybox, an eight-lane athletics track, four locker rooms, storerooms and a press room.
"We're putting up top-level sports infrastructure here, which is within the budget that was established earlier," Lima2019 director Carlos Neuhaus said in a statement. "The important thing is that we're not going to leave white elephants behind. We're going to leave an important legacy for the country."
Chilean construction firm Besalco and Besco of Peru, meanwhile, are finishing up the athletes' villa in Villa El Salvador, with other contracts underway, including the Callao sports center (Sacyr-Saceem), Villa El Salvador sports complex (OHL-JE Construcciones), Videna sports complex (Cosapi) and Villa María del Triunfo infrastructure (Sacyr-Saceem).
President Martín Vizcarra has pledged to finish work on the games ahead of the July 26 inauguration. The 17-day event will gather 7,000 athletes from 41 countries to take part in 62 disciplines, aiming to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
PUBLIC INVESTMENT
In related infrastructure news, public investment topped 33bn soles (US$10bn) in 2018, helping to spur 4% GDP growth, President Vizcarra said. Tax revenues also rose to 14.5% of GDP from 13.4% in 2017, he said.
"Public investment will enable us to move from economic growth towards development, because we've had spectacular macroeconomic results over the past 20 years," Vizcarra said at an event in Lima. "The budget has been very important for the country's economy and has improved."
Vizcarra transferred 10bn soles to regional and local governments last year to finance infrastructure projects. About a quarter of the 168bn-sol budget set for 2019 will be allocated to public infrastructure, according to the government.
