Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina officially opened the new passenger terminal at Punta Cana international airport, according to a government release.
Covering 33,000m2 the new terminal B required a US$100mn investment and will boost the airport's capacity to 3,000 passengers per hour.
The new terminal features two passenger levels, 55 check-in counters, seven jet bridges and nine departure gates. Food and retail establishments are also available, as well as areas for kids and smokers.
According to Grupo Punta Cana, the holding group of concessionaire Corporación Aeroportuaria del Este, the new terminal will be the most efficient and modern of the Caribbean, allowing 23 airplanes to operate simultaneously.
Together the new terminal will add 1,100 direct jobs to the 6,000 already existing.
Revamp works on terminal A are set to begin in the coming months.
