RIM mulls manufacturing in Tierra del Fuego

Canadian firm Research In Motion ( RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM), maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, is looking at manufacturing the devices in Argentina's Tierra del Fuego province, local paper La Nación reported. According to the report, the company is looking for a local partner to start producing smartphones in the province and has already contacted Argentina's industry ministry to set up operations. Several companies - including Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Motorola (NYSE: MOT), LG, Samsung Electronics, Brightstar and ZTE - are already manufacturing in the province or have announced plans to start production in the near future. The government passed several laws in late 2009 to provide fiscal benefits to companies that manufacture or assemble products in Tierra del Fuego, the country's southernmost province. The law was designed to boost ICT product production in the region and was paired with a law imposing higher taxes on imported goods.
