São Paulo opens 2 new prisons

São Paulo state opened two new prisons, both in the municipality of Pacaembu.

The state government said 91mn reais (US$23.6mn) was invested in the jails, 43mn of which came from the federal government.

Each has 11,514m2 of floor space and capacity for 823 inmates.

Brazil's prisons are notorious for being overcrowded and in poor condition. A series of riots shook the prison system in recent years, with multiple fatalities.
