São Paulo to boast solar-powered smart bins

Bnamericas

São Paulo will boast five solar-powered smart bins under a pilot program launched by local waste management firm Inova.

The trash cans are manufactured by Massachusetts-based supplier BigBelly Solar with each unit costing US$3.5mn, according to Brazilian news portal Exame.

Features of the new technology include sensors that send an automatic SMS message when bins are full and a compactor that allows for storage of up to 600l of recycled waste.

Solar panels on the top need only eight hours of sunlight to power the bins for a month.

According to Inova, the units avoid problems like vandalism and leaks while holding up to 12 times more than conventional bins.

Inova said it planned to expand the initiative later this year.
