Scientists produce biodegradable PET
Bnamericas Published: Wednesday, May 30, 2007
Brazilian and French researchers and scientists have created a new biodegradable plastic that decomposes in soil within a month and a half, Brazilian technology news website IDG Now! reported. The plastic, which is more environmentally friendly than traditional forms, is made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) materials such as beverage bottles and food packaging, according to the report. The researchers used aliphatic polyester, a type of polymer easily consumed by microorganisms present in soil, in the synthesis of the new plastic. "By mixing the two [PET and aliphatic polyester], we were able to formulate a product that is highly biodegradable," chemist and co-author of the study Ana Paula Testa Pezzin was quoted as saying by the website. Depending on the quantity of PET and aliphatic polyester used, the final product can have properties such as thermal and mechanical resistance or porosity. Research institutions involved in the study included Universidade da Região de Joinville (Univille), in Brazil's Santa Catarina state, Pontifícia Universidade Católica, in Rio Grande do Sul state, and Université Pierre e Marie Curie in Paris.
