Senate approves PPP law
Bnamericas Published: Friday, July 08, 2011
Uruguay's senate has unanimously approved a bill to regulate public-private partnership (PPP) contracts for infrastructure construction and services, the legislature said in a release. The government hopes the lower house will quickly ratify the changes in the bill approved by the senate so that the new law may be implemented as soon as possible, local paper El Espectador reported. The bill was submitted to congress by the national government last year. Authorities will need at least six months to implement the new framework, as all bidding rules and concession contracts will need to be adjusted to the new law, BNamericas reported previously. Several PPP projects have been in a holding pattern awaiting the new legislation, including the first phase of a highway renovation plan, national development corporation ( CND) president Luis Porto told the paper.
