Racsa returns idle 5G frequency block

Costa Rican telco Radiográfica Costarricense (Racsa) has returned a block of idle radio frequencies in the 5,713MHz band, which are used for 5G mobile services.
The move was confirmed by Costa Rica's deputy minister of telecommunications Emilio Arias and Racsa general manager Francisco Calvo, according to a report by newspaper El Financiero.
"The process has already been completed and the partial frequency repayment does not affect compliance with the respective concession," said Calvo.
Calvo also acknowledged that the return will result in a decrease in Racsa's annual payments for radio spectrum, adding that the company is not planning any further returns.
Racsa has been in trouble for several years and has been the subject of bankruptcy rumors for some time.
The company, owned by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), has accumulated losses of 56.5bn colons (US$105mn) over the last six years, which have been covered by loans and capital injection from the state-owned telco.
Even so, the company managed to finish 2015 with its head above water.
