The Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) presents the third Report on Mobile Service Coverage in the Agricultural Zones of Mexico for the year 2021, which makes it possible to identify the agricultural zones (protected and seasonal) that have access to mobile service coverage in 3G and 4G technologies, and provides an input for targeting actions that allow development and innovation in this economic sector of our country.

For this new edition, a section was included with the information generated by the mobile tool "AgroOferta", which allows visualizing the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the productive sector of agriculture.

It is important to highlight that the integration of ICT, as well as the Internet, in the agricultural sector has shown great opportunities for growth in productivity in this industry, resulting in quality and cost benefits for producers and consumers, as well as Generated growth alternatives for rural communities where technological tools are incorporated.

Among the main findings, the following stand out:

PROTECTED AGRICULTURE

  • In the 32 states, 100% of the production units in protected agriculture have mobile service coverage in at least one technology (3G or 4G).
  • The State of Mexico has 36,874 production units, fields or protected agriculture plantations, the largest number of units are in the municipalities: Villa Guerrero with 13,418 units, Coatepec de Harinas with 6,360 units and Tenancingo with 2,539 units, of which 100% have coverage in 3G and 4G technologies.
  • In Yucatan, in the 19,568 production units, fields or plantations of protected agriculture, it was identified that 100% of these have mobile coverage in at least one technology.
  • In Michoacán, for the 9,691 production units, fields or plantations of protected agriculture, it was identified that 100% of these have mobile coverage in at least one technology.

RAINFALL AGRICULTURE

  • In 18 of the 32 states, more than 90% of the production units, fields or temporary plantations have mobile service coverage in at least one technology.
  • On average, 94% of temporary agriculture production units have coverage in at least one technology.

Among the states with the highest percentage of coverage in rainfed agriculture are:

  • The State of Mexico, with 497,095 temporary agriculture production units, fields or plantations, is considered the state with the largest number of fields or plantations. Where the largest number of these are concentrated are the municipalities: San Felipe del Progreso with 27,019, Ixtlahuaca with 26,586 and San José del Rincón with 22,793 units, where 100% of the units have coverage in both technologies.
  • Oaxaca, for its part, registers 419,068 production units, fields or temporary agriculture plantations, of which 100% have mobile coverage in at least one technology.
  • In Jalisco, for the 253,596 production units, fields or temporary agriculture plantations, it was identified that 96% of these have mobile coverage in at least one technology.
  • In Tamaulipas there are 19,996 temporary agriculture production units, fields or plantations, of which 89% of the temporary agriculture production units have mobile coverage in at least one technology.

AGROOFERTA APP

  • According to information from the AgroOferta mobile application, this service has 1,835 registered users, most of whom are concentrated in the States of Mexico, Michoacán and Quintana Roo.
  • In 2 of the 32 states, more than 90% of users in each state have demanded an agricultural product within the application.
  • In 6 of the 32 states, more than 60% of the users in each state have offered an agricultural product within the application.

Due to the above, the IFT considers it relevant to continue generating information that allows knowing the national panorama of access to telecommunications in the different agricultural areas, in order to serve as an input for the design of public policies aimed at promoting access. and the adoption of ICTs and, as mentioned by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), to "empower farmers both in productive and technological terms and in their role as citizens" [1] .
