Veolia awarded emergency waterworks contract in Brazil

The mayor of Brazilian state Santa Catarina's Palhoça municipality, Camilo Martins, has contracted French resource management firm Veolia to provide potable water supply and sewage collection and treatment services for the city, according to a local government release.

The city's water and sewage department Samae terminated its contract with waterworks firm Companhia Nacional de Saneamento (Conasa) due to system leaks over the past few months.

An emergency three-month contract has been agreed with Veolia and a tender to hire a company to provide long-term services will be launched in a month, local paper Notícias do Dia reported without divulging the contract amounts.

"Our objective is to assure the quality of life for our residents... If the new company does not meet expectations, we will not hesitate to crack down on the matter again," Martins said.
