Vesper launches 1xEV-DO broadband services
Bnamericas Published: Tuesday, March 25, 2003
Brazilian competitive local exchange carrier Vesper launched on Monday 1xEV-DO broadband services in the Sao Paulo metro region, in partnership with Canadian supplier Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT), Vesper said in a statement. "Vesper is the first telecoms operator in Latin America to offer services with this technology for 3G," Vesper CEO Luiz Kaufmann said, adding that worldwide only two other operators have launched similar services (in South Korea and the US). The CDMA product allows data transmission speeds of up to 2.4Mbps, or 50 times faster than dial-up access. The service facilitates large file downloads, multimedia messages, and videoconferencing. CDMA technology was patented by US-based Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), which is also Vesper's controlling shareholder. Vesper provides voice and data services in 165 Brazilian municipalities, including 17 state capitals, in the country's southeast, north, and northeast regions.
