Chilean construction firm Vilicic is scheduled to complete work on a highway in southernmost region XII in February 2013, public works ministry ( MOP) contract supervisor Claudio Muñoz told BNamericas. Construction of the final 10km stretch of the route linking regional capital Punta Arenas with Fuerte Bulnes began in March, Muñoz said. The project involves paving the route, and will cost some 5.39bn pesos (US$11.4mn). Vilicic completed paving of the first 8km stretch of the project in April, Muñoz added. That stretch was budgeted at 4.3bn pesos. The project aims to improve tourism to Bulnes fort, which is located at the exact geographic center of Chile. "The direct benefit is not only for tourism, it's also for all those that live in this sector, who for years have been waiting for this route to be paved," public works minister Hernán de Solminihac said in a statement. MOP is also carrying out work on maritime terminals in four provinces in the region and expanding the passenger terminal in Punta Arenas airport, the release said.
