Colombia okays nearly US$500mn for wastewater plant

Colombian regional corporation CAR Cundinamarca approved 1.5tn pesos (US$478mn) in funding for the Canoas wastewater treatment plant.

The project requires 4.5tn pesos in total, of which another 2.94tn will come from the Bogotá city government and 61bn from the Cundinamarca departmental government, the regional corporation said in a release.

Of the total, 1.48tn pesos will be used for construction and 1.46tn for operations.

The plant will have capacity to treat 16m3/s, making it the largest of its kind in Colombia. It will treat 70% of the capital's wastewater plus 100% of that from the Soacha distrct.

A US$112mn contract to build a pumping station for the plant was awarded last November to consortium EE Canoas, made of Mota Engil Colombia and Empresa Constructora Brasil.

The tender to build the plant is expected to be launched in the coming weeks with a prequalification process, according to a separate statement from the Bogotá government.
