Works on Mexico City-Toluca rail line may have damaged local spring
Construction of a 4.5km tunnel on the route of the Mexico City-Toluca interurban passenger train in La Pila in the Mexico City district of Cuajimalpa may have damaged one of the area's 16 existing springs, according to local residents.
Édgar Salimas, representative of a local farmers group, told local daily La Jornada, that some of the workers involved in the tunnel's construction have reported the presence of a water leak, which could have been caused by damage to one of the spring's regulating storage reservoirs.
The farmers met with local opposition lawmaker Ana Ángeles to express their concerns about the state of the springs, according to the paper.
The group of over 2,000 farmers from San Lorenzo Acopilco in Cuajimalpa have long opposed the route chosen for the construction of the railway, claiming that it could damage water sources in the area, as well as the region's local vegetation.
Ángeles told the paper that she will formally request that local water utility Sacmex and national water authority Conagua carry out a physical investigation into the matter as soon as possible.
The 57.7km high-speed rail project that to link the cities of Toluca and Mexico City is one of the federal government's landmarks projects. The line is set to have four stations and two terminals. Construction of the 4.5km tunnel was proposed to avoid damaging environmentally protected areas located near Santa Fe in the west of Mexico City.
The route of the line was already modified once after works began were started when local and federal authorities received complaints from residents of the high-end Santa Fe neighborhood.
Concerns about the use of explosives in the construction works and the potential risks to surrounding property have also been raised.
Construction of the project is being carried out in stages. It is expected to be finished in 2018.
