US Senator Criticizes Brazil Steel Deal

Bnamericas
United States senator Jay Rockefeller (Democrat, West Virginia) criticized the steel import deal with Brazil announced this week that was brokered by US President Bill Clinton and trade representatives from both countries, saying that it was significantly less that the amount the US domestic steel industry demands and needs to protect it from cheap imports of some steel products. The accord signed cuts shipments of hot-rolled carbon steel by 28% and establishes minimum prices for Brazilian imports of these products. United States trade authorities had slapped anti-dumping tariffs of up to 64% on such Brazilian imports, as well as from several other countries, including Argentina and Venezuela. The present accord only deals with Brazilian products, from 10 manufacturers, including CSN and Usiminas.
