Description

The Las Tres Vírgenes geothermal field has an installed generation capacity of 10MW via two units of the same size. Mexican state power firm CFE carried out stratigraphic and geological studies to characterize the groundwater sources and the water produced by the wells. Studies showed the operation has a 25-year lifespan with an option to expand into the southern part of the Cerro Blanco geological structure, in order to add an extra 20MW of capacity. The field is related to a quaternary volcanic complex, formed by three volcanoes aligned north-south, with a deposit dominated by liquid. The studies were conducted across a 24km2 area, including the zone of volcanoes La Virgen, El Azufre, El Viejo, El Partido and their peripheries. Drilling of the first exploratory well, LV-2, started in October, 1986, while the commercial exploitation of the resource began in May, 2001. To date, 11 wells have been drilled in the field: four productive wells, four exploratory wells and three injector wells.
