Description

The project involves the construction of a desalination plant as part of the El Morro copper-gold project, a 70:30 JV between Canadian miners Goldcorp and New Gold. The plant is to be located in the coastal area known as Totoral, located in Chile's Atacama region (III). The plant will employ a reverse osmosis process, with a production capacity of 740l/s of desalinated water, and nominal production of 640l/s. The plant will capture a maximum of 2,028l/s, and waste from the process will be discharged back into the sea at a rate of around 1,389l/s. The intake pipeline will be 435m long, 1,200mm in diameter and submerged at a depth of 30m. The discharge pipeline will be 340m long, 900mm in diameter and submerged at a depth of 20m. The plant will require power supply of 13MW which will be obtained through connection with a substation while further project elements include 198km of water transfer pipeline, five pumping stations and two 49,000m3 storage reservoirs, among other interconnected works.
