The Puerto Castilla multipurpose port will have three terminals and will be able to handle post-Panamax and capesize vessels, the latter with capacity of 170,000 deadweight tons (DWT). The first docking area would have the capacity to handle 6Mt/y of coal and 240,000t/y of diesel. The dock would be equipped with two gantry cranes, among other equipment. A second dock would have the capacity to handle 10Mt/y of iron ore, 500,000t/y of limestone and 1Mt/y of bulk cargo. This dock would have one gantry crane. The third dock would be able to handle 2Mt/y of copper concentrate and would have one radial crane. The port facility will also supply the 2.1GW coal-fired Castilla thermo plant being developed by OMX's sister company MPX Energia. According to a Supreme Court ruling from August 2012 that rejected the construction of thermo project Castilla, Brazilian company MPX must submit an EIA that integrates the plant and the port as a single project
