Description

The Spence mine began operations in 2007. It is wholly owned by multinational mining company BHP Billiton through its Pampa Norte division, together with Cerro Colorado mine. The mine site, located on the outskirts of the city of Antofagasta in northern Chile, produced 180,300t of copper during FY2012.It is a copper open pit operation that uses SX-EW processing. According to its original design, the mine should produce 200,000t/y of copper cathodes during a 19-year useful life. Estimated investment during construction was US$990mn. Some 8,000 workers were employed during that stage.
