Description

Vaca Muerta is a 30,000km2 shale deposit. Some 40% of the zone has oil and gas production potential. Vaca Muerta is one of the biggest shale deposits in the world, with estimated reserves of 22.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent (Bboe). Argentina's state- owned oil company, YPF, and US oil group Chevron expect to start the second stage of Vaca Muerta's development in 2014. The plan includes a joint investment of US$1.6bn and the drilling of 170 wells. YPF's overall aim at Vaca Muerta is to drill 1,500 additional wells and to produce of 50,000b/d oil and 3Mm3/d natural gas. An investment of more than US$15bn is required to fully develop the cluster, located in the Loma La Lata Norte and Loma Campana areas of Vaca Muerta. Other companies including Apache, Chevron, Total, Exxon and Arpetrol are also exploring the zone.
