In terms of market dynamics, the report reveals that reinsurance capital stood at a peak level of USD595 billion on December 31, 2016; which was an increase of 5 percent relative to the prior year. Traditional reinsurance capital rose by 4 percent to USD514 billion over the year to December 31, 2016 through solid earnings. On the other hand, alternative capital rose by 13 percent to USD81 billion over the year to December 31, 2016; principally reflecting additional deployment into collateralized reinsurance structures.

Insured catastrophe losses were roughly USD7.6 billion for the first quarter of 2017; indicating an active but below ten-year average level of payouts. This is 48 percent below the recent ten-year average of USD14.8 billion. Looking forward in 2017, El Niño is expected to officially return during the second half of the calendar year.
