State-run telco Antel, established in 1974, provides local, mobile, long distance and internet services in the country. Antel led the mobile telephony market at end-June 2012, with 2.25mn subscribers, or 47% of the market, according to Ursec, Uruguay's telecoms watchdog. Antel currently operates 49% of total assigned mobile frequencies in Uruguay, followed by Movistar, with 31%, while Claro operates the remainder.
