El Salvador's state power company CEL is engaged in the generation of clean electricity from hydro and wind energy sources, as well as developing hydro projects. The company owns and operates four hydro plants - Guajoyo, Cerrón Grande, 5 de Noviembre and 15 de Noviembre, all located along the Lempa river - with a total installed capacity of 472MW of electric power. Its projects include the 261MW El Cimarron hydro project, which would be built in the upper Lempa river basin and boast four turbines to generate an average 687GWh/y; the 15 de Noviembre plant expansion project, which entails the installation of two 40MW units in a new machine house, with completion penciled in for 2015; and the 65.7MW Chaparral hydro project, spanning span the municipalities of San Luis de la Reina, Carolina and San Antonio del Mosco in San Miguel department. CEL was founded in 1945 and is based in San Salvador, El Salvador.
