Brazil's Pernambuco water utility Companhia Pernambucana de Saneamento S.A. (Compesa) supplies water and operates sanitation and water supply systems for state residents. Created in 1971, the company operates in 173 of the state's 185 municipalities. With IDB financing, in 2015 Compesa launched a waterworks tender under the state's US$330mn Ipojuca basin environmental sanitation program. The project involves installing 82,714m of pipelines, building a sewage treatment plant and wrapping up the construction of a wastewater pumping station in the city of Gravatá.
