Founded in 1992, Chilean power generator Guacolda operates four 152MW thermoelectric plants at its Huasco complex in Atacama region (III), for a gross power output of 608MW (550MW net power capacity), and 170km of transmission lines linked to Chile's central interconnected grid. Guacolda is also the country's largest importer of bituminous and sub-bituminous coal.
In 2014, AES Gener S.A. acquired the 50% stake of Empresa Eléctrica Guacolda S.A. (Guacolda) held by Empresas Copec S.A. and Inversiones Ultraterra Limited, becoming the sole owner of the power generating company. Right after that, AES Gener sold 50% minus one share of the company to El Aguila Energy S.p.A.
In September 2015, because of a corporate reorganization, Empresa Eléctrica Guacolda S.A was taken over by Guacolda Energía S.A., with the latter acquiring all the assets, liabilities, rights and obligations of the former. In December of the same year, Guacolda V, the company's coal-fired thermal unit, started commercial operations.
