Description:
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is an autonomous branch of the Panamanian government that manages the Panama Canal. The ACP maintains the fifty mile stretch of locks, dredged lake, and channels that constitute the canal. It also runs one of the world's largest watershed management projects. In 2007, the company started the Panama Canal expansion project. The US$5bn, ten-year project will build another set of larger locks on both ends of the canal as well as widen and deepen shipping channels. It should boost the inter-oceanic corridor's capacity by 40% and consolidate the country's position as a north-south connection hub for the Western Hemisphere. The expanded canal is scheduled to begin commercial operations in April 2016,
