Spotlight: Updating LatAm sub-sea fiber projects
Latin America has become a hotspot for international submarine connections.
In the past few years, a host of different cable projects either leading to or from the region have been announced, most of them on the Atlantic side.
These are initiatives being pushed by independent connectivity players, telecom operators or multinational internet giants, which are carrying them out individually or in consortiums with various other players.
With several submarine fiber projects underway, BNamericas takes a look at how each of them is progressing when they are expected to go live.
- SACS
The South Atlantic Cable System reached both of its ends at the end of February and is due to go into operation in August, after completing necessary testing.
The 6,300km cable is fully owned and managed by Angola Cables. It is the first direct route between Latin America and Africa, connecting Quissama in Angola to Fortaleza in Brazil, the capital of northeastern Ceará state.
- TANNAT
The 2,000km Uruguay-Brazil link was fully deployed by August last year and is due to go live by the end of this year.
It was built by Uruguay's Antel and Google and runs from Santos in Brazil to Maldonado in Uruguay. The cable will also link to Monet, a 10,500km cable system already up and running (see below).
- JUNIOR
A small stretch connecting São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro via Praia Grande, Junior will also intersect with Monet but unlike the other two will be exclusively operated by Google. The cable is in the final deployment phase and, like Tannat, is expected to be activated by December.
- ARBR
The Argentine-Brazil line is currently in the deployment phase. Its activation has been postponed to the first quarter of next year from the second half of 2018.
Co-developed by Seaborn Networks and Argentina's Werthein conglomerate, it will have a landing point in the coastal city of Praia Grande in São Paulo state and will lead to Buenos Aires via a landing point in Las Toninas, a coastal town in Buenos Aires province.
ARBR will connect to the existing Seabras-1 cable landing station in Praia Grande.
- CURIE
The components are currently being built for the 10,000km Valparaíso-Los Angeles cable owned and managed by Google.
The deployment phase of the Chile-US cable is expected to begin in January 2019 and the system is estimated to go into operation some six months later.
- GLOBENET
Also connecting Brazil to Argentina, this cable will add Argentina to Globenet's 23,500km network, which currently spans from Brazil to the US, with landing points in Colombia, Venezuela and Bermuda.
The cable has not yet been deployed. It will connect Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo via Praia Grande, and also to Buenos Aires via Las Toninas.
The project has a ready-for-service date planned for the first half of 2020.
Another two new Latin American systems, SEABRAS-1 and MONET, are already in operation.
The first is managed by Seaborn Networks and connects the US to Brazil, while the latter is coordinated by a consortium formed by Google, Angola Cables, Brazil's Algar Telecom and Uruguay's state-run telco Antel, and also links the US to Brazil.
