São Paulo, November 22, 2022 – Aegea, a leading company in the private sanitation sector, and BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) have entered into a partnership for the company to join the Floresta Viva Program – an initiative led by the bank that supports projects in Brazilian biomes, protecting water sources and carrying out reforestation.

The adhesion contract was signed this Monday (21st), at the BNDES office in Brasília, by the CEO of Aegea, Radamés Casseb, and by the president of the BNDES, Gustavo Montezano. The structure is a “ matchfunding ”, that is, for every R$1 from the private sector, the bank puts in another R$1. reforestation programs in the Guariroba and Cabeceiras Basins of the Pantanal and in the Maricá-Guarapina Lagoon System and in the Surui River Environmental Protection Area, in Rio de Janeiro.

By joining the Floresta Viva Program, Aegea reaffirms its commitment to environmental protection and expands its actions aimed at preserving the climate, via carbon capture by nature, maintaining biodiversity, preserving the soil and increasing water resilience in the biomes where it is present, since reforestation is one of the most effective ways of preserving water resources in river basins across the country. Through the partnership, 200 hectares will be restored in important regions where Aegea is present in Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

“This initiative is in line with our pillar of protecting the environment, with the expansion of water resilience through the forest recovery of watersheds in regions where we are present”, says Radamés Casseb, CEO of Aegea. “As leaders in our sector, we understand our role of investing in actions that generate environmental and social impacts and the importance of joining forces for the continuous construction of a legacy for the benefit of the country and future generations”, he adds.

“Floresta Viva is an initiative that will generate environmental, climate and economic profit for its donors, with valuable social impacts for the communities. Aegea is yet another company that believes in and works with the BNDES in the new economy of sustainability. With it, there are already 15 partner institutions of the Bank that together leverage their efforts and walk towards the future”, celebrates Gustavo Montezano, president of BNDES.

Living Forest Program

Launched in November 2021, Floresta Viva is an initiative aimed at the ecological restoration of Brazilian biomes with a focus on the formation of ecological corridors and the recovery of watersheds. The original investment target was R$500 million over seven years, with up to 50% of the Bank's resources. This total amount was exceeded by 37% and has already reached R$ 686.27 million. The purpose of the initiative is to carry out projects to increase the vegetation cover with native species in all Brazilian biomes, in addition to strengthening the technical and management structure of the production chain in the ecological restoration sector. The expected results are the reduction of erosion processes, the preservation of biodiversity, the maintenance of water resources and the improvement of the microclimate.

With matchfunding , the BNDES intends to reach R$ 1 billion in investments, reach between 32,000 and 66,000 hectares of restored area, and remove up to 18 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, considering a vegetation growth cycle of 25 years.
