Brazil plans to increase hydro storage levels

Brazil aims to increase the water storage average of hydroelectric power plants to improve energy security.

Implementing a hydro plant recovery plan, the government intends to reach average levels of 47.1% and 65.1% between 2023 and 2027.

From 2013 to 2022, the average registered was 41%, 27 percentage points lower compared with the 2003-12 average.

The decrease reflected a higher occurrence of droughts, including the record one in 2021.

The plan, currently in the public consultation phase, contemplates the mandatory 580mn-real (US$115mn), 10-year investment foreseen in Eletrobras’ privatization law in the recovery of the São Francisco and Parnaíba river basins and in the area of influence of Furnas' hydroelectric plants.

It also foresees the expansion of energy transmission capacity between the national subsystems, the enhancement of computer models used by grid operator ONS and the reduction of net load demand to be met by hydro plants, as installed capacity based on other sources, such as wind and solar, grows.

Hydro power accounts for about 60%, or 110GW, of Brazil’s electricity matrix, considering large, small and mini hydro plants.

Federal energy research company EPE expects hydro power capacity to grow to around 124GW by 2031, which, by then, will represent 45% of total electricity potency.
