Honduras receives funds for tri-national highway studies
Honduras has received funds from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Cabei) to start the pre-construction studies for a highway in the tri-national Trifinio area.
Second vice president Doris Gutiérrez confirmed that Cabei donated US$3mn, US$1mn corresponding to Honduras, according to La Tribuna news outlet. The rest corresponds to El Salvador and Guatemala.
Information about a possible tender was not provided.
“On January 3 we got the news through a note from the finance ministry, in the sense that they authorized a non-reimbursable fund on behalf of Cabei to be used in the Trifinio area in Copán Ruinas and Esquipulas, which comprises a tri-national touristic highway that will generate jobs and very important economic revenue by boosting tourism,” she was quoted as saying by Noticias247 news outlet.
Total length of the highway will be 46km, with 10km corresponding to Honduras. The project will connect the cities of Las Palmas in El Salvador, Esquipulas in Guatemala and Copán Ruinas in Honduras. Estimated travel time is 40 minutes.
Gutiérrez confirmed that the mayors of the cities involved are committed to the project.
Part of Honduras’ funds will also go to the construction of a water treatment plant in Ocotepeque city.
