Mantos Copper submits project to optimize concentrator plant
Mining company Mantos Copper sent Chile's environmental evaluation service an US$89.5mn project to increase sulfide processing capacity from 7.3Mt/y to 10Mt/y at its Mantos Blancos concentrator plant in Antofagasta region.
The increase is equivalent to an average of 27,400t/d and would increase copper concentrate production from 175,000t/y to 233,500t/y starting in 2024.
The six-year project has an estimated start date of January 2023.
The main works include replacing mine equipment, additional equipment for operations at the sulfide plant and expansion of the ballast deposit by 25.3Mt, according to the environmental impact assessment sent to authorities last week.
Canada’s Capstone Mining and Chile’s Mantos Copper completed a business combination in March to ensure the operational performance of the Mantos Blancos mine and MantoVerde in Atacama region.
Mantos Blancos is an open pit mine where sulfide and oxide material is extracted to obtain copper concentrates and cathodes.
Its estimated production for 2022 is 52,000-56,000t of copper.
