Mexico energy minister reveals name of state lithium company

Bnamericas

Mexico’s state-owned lithium extraction and production firm will be called Litio para México.

Energy minister Rocío Nahle revealed the name via Twitter on Wednesday. Initially, she was expected to present it in late July, ahead of the framework for a regulator in late August.

Mexico could contain a small percentage of lithium, which is expected to become a key metal in the global energy transition.

Unlike lithium deposits in Chile, Argentina and Bolivia, Mexico’s lithium resources are contained in clays, and technology to produce lithium from them does not yet exist.

China’s Ganfeng has the rights to the country’s sole active lithium project, in Sonora state, with investors hoping it may become profitable in the next decade.
