Security improvements nearly complete at La Platosa - Excellon

Security and access improvements following a blockade at Toronto-based Excellon Resources' (TSX: EXN) La Platosa silver-lead-zinc mine in Mexico are nearing completion, company president Brendan Cahill told BNamericas. Excellon announced plans for a new access road and security fence at the mine in Durango state last month in its third quarter results statement. The work, which will cost about US$500,000 and is expected to be completed in Q4, follows what the company described as an illegal blockade by the La Sierrita ejido, or land cooperative. The blockade, which ran from July 8 to October 16, resulted in steep falls in production in Q3 at the mine, with silver down to 19,545oz from 283,839oz in 3Q11. The company reported a net loss of US$4.3mn in the quarter. The blockade was reportedly a measure taken by the ejido to "peacefully" push for resolutions to alleged breaches in its land rental agreement with the company. "The new fence and road are nearing completion and are designed to expedite ore shipments, improve access and generally improve site security, including ensuring uninterrupted access to the state highway," Cahill told BNamericas. "We haven't had any problems whatsoever since the blockade was lifted, and the mine has been operating normally since October 16." Excellon also owns the Miguel Auza silver-lead-zinc project in Zacatecas state and exploration projects in Canada.
