Southern Copper begins construction of a new wastewater treatment plant for 105mn soles

This is a machine translation of the Southern Perú release originally published in Spanish.

The company Southern Perú began the construction of the wastewater treatment plant in the province of Ilo. This work will require an investment of more than S/ 105 million and will be carried out thanks to the Development Fund committed by the company to the Moquegua authorities, benefiting more than 77,000 people.

The company began earthmoving and land adaptation works in the Media Luna area, prior to the installation of structures and equipment. In addition, Southern Perú will be in charge of the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for the next 30 years, with which one of the main public health concerns of the town will be addressed, due to the dumping of wastewater from the drains to the sea, which affects the marine fauna and flora and constitutes a permanent threat to the health of the population.

The President of the Council of Ministers Aníbal Torres, the Minister of Energy and Mines Alessandra Herrera, the Minister of Housing, Construction and Sanitation César Paniagua, the Regional Governor of Moquegua Zenón Cuevas Pare, the provincial mayor of Ilo Gerardo Carpio, the congressmen for Moquegua Víctor Cutipa and Samuel Coayla and the executive president of Southern Perú Ing. Óscar González Rocha.

“This teamwork with the Central Government, the Provincial Municipality of Ilo and the EPS Service Provider Company is making it possible to materialize the long-awaited Ilo WWTP treatment plant project. Fulfilling our commitment, we are financing the construction of the Media Luna Plant and we will be in charge of its operation and maintenance for 30 years,” highlighted Mr. González Rocha.

For his part, the head of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers stressed that the mining sector is essential for the country's growth and the synergy between the State and the private sector is allowing the construction of emblematic works. "I want to thank the work that the company is doing and also emphasize that from the Government we will always be open to dialogue and receive initiatives in order to continue promoting key sectors for the population such as water and sanitation," he added.

In his turn, the Regional Governor of Moquegua Zenón Cueva Pare, highlighted the importance of the project and thanked Mr. González Rocha for the willingness of Southern Peru to carry out the contribution committed to the population of Ilo and local authorities.

THE ILO WWTP

According to the schedule, the execution of the work will last approximately 24 months, so the earthworks will end in the third week of December 2022 and the construction and assembly of plant structures in the third quarter of 2024.

In addition, the work seeks to improve the environmental and public health conditions of the city of Ilo, avoiding the dumping of wastewater on the seabed. Likewise, the work will generate employment, given that local labor is prioritized both in the earthmoving stage and in the construction and assembly of structures.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

Regarding the "Operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant", Southern Peru assumed the commitment to collaborate with EPS Ilo for 30 years, guaranteeing the correct operation and maintenance of the WWTP and treatment services.

It is worth mentioning that the agreement with the Provincial Municipality of Ilo and EPS Ilo also establishes that Southern Peru will receive the wastewater treated at the plant, as a reciprocal benefit for the execution, operation and maintenance of the WWTP.
