Votorantim Peru zinc unit Atacocha workers end strike
Workers at Peruvian zinc-lead miner Atacocha (BVL: ATACOB1), a division of Votorantim Metais unit Milpo (BVL: MILPOC1), ended a two-week strike for improved benefits, Milpo said in a corporate filing.
Two of the company’s three unions -mining workers and concentrator plant workers, on strike at the mine in the central Andean region of Pasco since September 30, ended the walkout October 13, Milpo said Monday. The employees union, non-unionized workers and contract workers didn’t join the strike.
“Operations at the mining unit were not interrupted by this situation,” the company said in the filing.
The Atacocha work stoppage followed a 48-hour national strike last month by Peru’s mining federation to push for better pensions and more workers on the payroll.
Milpo plans to invest US$275mn in expansions and development of new mines, CEO Victor Gobitz said last month.
Milpo treated 1.8Mt concentrates in the second quarter, 33% higher than the previous year. Treated zinc concentrates rose 15% to 92,335t, while copper and lead rose 34% and 79% to 38,943t and 11,055t, respectively. Treated silver concentrates rose 64% to 1.27Moz.
