This week's sector headlines had news of IT firms and other officials laying down the law and expanding in Chile. Companies set up dragnets nationwide to capture fugitive business opportunities, while police officials said they were out to lock up perpetrators of cybercrimes.

For example, Argentine IT consultancy Snoop Consulting said its 2010 plans include consolidating its presence in Chile. Snoop's Chile unit expects to double both its client base and revenues by next year, while accounting for 30% of the company's overall sales. The company is also working with the local IT industry association Acti in efforts to beef up offshoring services provided from Chile, particularly to the US.

Meanwhile, the local unit of Microsoft said it is planning on expanding its presence outside capital Santiago. The unit aims to add and train more partners in other regions as a way to offer a more sophisticated portfolio. Microsoft partners in Chile are expected to generate US$1.6bn in revenues during 2009, according to a study developed by IDC and commissioned by the software giant.
