Description:

Buenavista del Cobre S.A de C.V, formerly Mexicana de Cananea S.A de C.V., is a Mexican mining company and a subsidiary of Grupo México since 1990. It operates the Buenavista open-pit copper mine in Sonora state, which is considered one of the biggest copper porphyry deposits in the world, and two processing plants. Buenavista has been operating since 1926. In August, 2014 Buenavista del Cobre was responsible for a 40,000 cubic liter spill of copper sulfates and acid into the Bacanuchi and Sonora rivers. In March, 2015 and after finding over 50 irregularities in its plant, Buenavista paid a US$1.5mn fine and put US$25mn into a trust.
