Fonplata is a multilateral fund set up by Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay to develop the River Plate basin through loans and public non-refundable resources. Fonplata gives priority to small and medium sized projects in boarder and interior regions favoring areas with limited monetary resources. Among projects financed by Fonplata are infrastructure; social investment in education, health, basic infrastructure and potable water; industrial, agriculture and livestock production; export promotion;environmental projects such as nature conservation, waste water treatment, water reuse, conservation and management of water basins, among others. The agency, founded in 1977, is based in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia and has an office in Asunción, Paraguay.
