Description:

Telecomunicações Brasileiras S.A. (Telebras) is a Brazilian state-owned telco reporting to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications. Founded in 1972, Telebras is responsible for implementing the Federal Government's private communications network, lending support to broadband Internet policies for universities, research centers, schools, hospitals, and other areas of public interest. The company also provides the infrastructure and support network for telecom services offered by private parties, state governments, the Federal District, municipal governments and non-profit organizations. Lastly, it also provides broadband Internet service where there is no adequate private supply. Telebras' fiber-optic network totaled 30,000km in 2018. The company is the owner and operator of SGDC-1, a high throughput satellite that will offer broadband across all of Brazil using services and equipment supplied by Viasat.
