Acer, Telmex Alliance Can't Meet Demand

United States-based computer hardware company Acer and Mexico's telecommunications company Telmex (NYSE: TMX) are unable to keep up with the growth of Internet connectivity demand in Mexico, according to Mexico's El Financiero. In July, the two companies began offering one year free Internet connection through Telemex's Internet subsidiary Prodigy for every Acer computer purchased. "Demand was initially for 250 packages a day. Now, demand has increased to 1,200 packages a day and the shipment time has increased to three weeks," Telmex director Jose Zorrilla Soto said. Telmex is now placing pressure on Acer to produce more computers. Telmex denied any responsibility for problems of slow connectivity and disruption, blaming computer manufacturers. Meanwhile, Prodigy plans to launch a similar program with US-based Compaq Computer (NYSE: CPQ) within two weeks and is in similar talks with Apple Computers.
