KMZ passes 800,000b/d milestone days before end of 2008

Mexican state oil company Pemex's Ku-Maloob-Zaap (KMZ) project reached a new milestone by exceeding 800,000b/d on December 28, CEO Jesús Reyes Heroles said in a presentation to the senate energy committee. Extra-heavy crude produced from the field reached 306,000b/d in 2008, up from 37,000b/d in 2002, Reyes Heroles said. The extra-heavy crude is below 13 degrees API. Production of extra-heavy crude has required mixing and improving oil as well as automation of operating processes. Pemex last year began mixing heavy crude from KMZ with light crude from other areas to maintain a 21 grade API. The company now is mixing 170,000b/d of 32-degree API crude with heavy KMZ crude to obtain the 21 degrees. KMZ production is expected to average 712,000b/d from 2009-17, with a maximum of 839,000b/d recorded in 2011, Reyes Heroles said.
