November Set for Construction of Argentina-Uruguay Pipeline

Bnamericas Published: Tuesday, July 16, 1996
Construction of a 240-mile gas pipeline from the Argentine province of Entre Rios to Montevideo, Uruguay's capital, is set to begin in November, the governor of Entre Rios said.

Governor Jorge Busti, who signed an accord with Uruguay's Ancap, the state-owned oil company which will build the pipeline, said there would be a few changes to the original plan.

Instead of using 8 inch pipes, the accord established that 12 inch pipes would be used, in correlation to the amount of gas needed by Uruguay.

Otherwise the plan would carry on as planned, Busti said, adding that the pipeline would supply Argentine natural gas to the Uruguay's cities on the eastern border with Argentina and to an underground gas storage deposit near Montevideo.

Argentina agreed in 1991 to supply Uruguay, which has no oil or gas reserves of its own, with natural gas and oil.
