Oil Workers Plan Strike

Ecuador's main oil worker union Fetrapec this week announced a strike in protest over the government's plan to privatize state oil assets and allow joint ventures between state oil company Petroecuador and private foreign oil companies. The strike's definitive date will be settled later this week, a Petroecuador source said, so as not to clash with ongoing protests against the government's economic policies organized by indigenous groups, public health and municipal workers, and chambers of commerce mainly from Guayaquil. The strike aims to bring Ecuador's oil sector to a virtual halt. More action could follow if the government fails to heed workers' demands, Fetrapec announced. Petroecuador employs 4,700 workers.
