Quito studying new western avenue

Bnamericas Published: Tuesday, June 17, 2003
Ecuadorian capital Quito's metropolitan public works company Emop is studying the feasibility of building a new western avenue in the sector near the base of the nearby Pichincha volcano, Emop head Ivan Alvarado announced. The avenue would run from the neighborhoods of Santa Catalina and Santa Rosa in the south of the capital, to Calderon in the north, La Hora quoted Alvarado as saying. Studies have estimated the avenue's 25km first phase from Santa Catalina to Mariana de Jesus avenue at US$80mn, he said, adding that resources are being sought from the Andean Development Corporation (CAF). The new avenue would solve Quito's transit problem by providing a direct north-south connection, according to Alvarado.
