Study: MoU expands 12.8% in Latin America
Bnamericas Published: Friday, March 20, 2009
The average minutes of usage per user (MoU) in mobile telephony in Latin America rose 12.8% in 2008, according to a recent study produced by Signals Telecoms Consulting. The study found that average MoU in Latin America expanded to 118.5 minutes in December last year from 105 minutes in December 2007. Signals said that the expansion is mainly due to operators' strategies to increase the number of on-net calls. Operators are offering better rates for on-net calls in markets where mobile telephony penetration is high. Signals VP Juan Gnius told BNamericas that through these strategies, mobile operators are ensuring customer loyalty while also making more use of network capacity. "The more network capacity the operator uses, the faster it amortizes its network," he added. The analyst also said that some operators are offering clients free on-net calls to certain numbers. With this strategy, subscribers are more inclined to remain in the operator's base, which is particularly applicable in those countries where number portability is already implemented. At end-2008, Chilean mobile operator Entel PCS was leading the regional ranking with an MoU of 174, followed by Mexican company Telcel with 172.
