Tech program launches eight new firms

The government of Mexico's Nuevo León state has launched eight new technology firms into the private sector through its new regional technologies initiative, local newspaper El Norte reported. Nuevo León spent US$150,000-200,000 in 2004 to get the project started. Also participating was the Innovation, Creativity and Capital Institute (IC2) from the University of Texas. The state is ready to bring in 20 more projects under the initiative, according to Romeo Flores Caballero, coordinator the Nuevo León government's Invite program, which pursues partnerships between northeast Mexico and Texas. "Five months after initiating this program of innovation and training, we have sown the first generation of technology commercialization [ventures] with the support of IC2. There are results [despite] the great speed and few resources [employed]," Flores was reported as saying. To continue with the program, Flores will need more money and plans to approach the federal science and technology board Conacyt for it. He expects the additional 20 projects will require around US$500,000.
