US Aug. Steel Imports Fall

Steel imports to the US fell 6.67% over August to 2.8Mt, down from 3Mt for the same month in 1998, according to the US Commerce Department. Imports from Mexico fell, while Brazil's increased, the report added. United States-based steelmakers have maintained complaints of dumping from foreign importers, especially from Latin America, former Soviet Union and Asia. United States President Bill Clinton is expected to make an announcement this week over new anti-dumping tariffs.
