Usiminas, Praxair sign license and sale agreement

Bnamericas Published: Thursday, February 27, 2003
Brazilian flat steelmaker Usiminas has signed an agreement with US specialty gas company Praxair (NYSE: PX) to develop and sell the latter's Cojet technology, AE-Setorial news service reported. Belo Horizonte-based Usiminas has been testing the gas injection technology at its mill since last year. Given positive results, the steelmaker signed a 10-year licensing contract and will form a partnership with Praxair to commercialize the technology, according to the report. Cojet's financial and operational benefits include improving yields, lowering dissolved oxygen, increasing manganese residuals and cutting aluminum additives, among others. It is estimated that the technology can save a typical integrated steel mill up to US$5/t of steel produced, AE-Setorial said. Together with its Sao Paulo-based subsidiary Cosipa, the Usiminas group produces some 9.2Mt/y of crude steel.
