Argentina's Santa Fe province rolls forward with plan to deploy 4,000km of fiber
Argentina's Santa Fe province has obtained the approval of the local congress to begin the Santa Fe + Conectada program, which involves the deployment of around 4,000km of fiber optics.
The lower chamber of the provincial congress gave final approval to debt of up to US$100mn with Latin American development bank CAF to finance the digital inclusion and educational transformation program.
The Santa Fe + Conectada project involves investments of US$125mn, of which US$100mn will be contributed by CAF with the rest coming from provincial funds.
The main objective of the program is to expand the infrastructure of the provincial data network and improve regional connectivity with the installation of fiber optics.
Under the program, internet coverage will be provided in 365 areas of the province. Of these localities, 200 will be connected with broadband and 165 through radio links.
Management of the provincial educational system is also expected to be improved, with the development of digital skills and mechanisms to connect education and the productive sector.
According to the Santa Fe government, 72% of schools do not currently have an internet connection and 54% of the province's students are educated in these institutions.
The program will be carried out over a period of four years.
TENDER
As part of the program, a tender to provide Wi-Fi connectivity to a group of neighborhoods in capital Santa Fe and the port city of Rosario has already been launched.
As of February 2021, the provincial budget for this project was US$540,000 to connect the neighborhoods in Santa Fe and another US$720,000 for Rosario.
In addition, funds of 5.67mn pesos (US$57,080) were earmarked for the Santa Fe project and another 7.56bn pesos for Rosario.
The economic proposals for the tender were opened in September. The companies qualifying were Tecnored and Silica Networks.
